Absolve Law & Legal Definition

Absolve means to set free, or release, from some obligation, debt, or responsibility; to pronounce free from guilt or blame; to acquit; to free from a duty or promise. For Example to absolve an offender amounts to an acquittal and remission of his punishment. Therefore when we say that a person was absolved by a majority it means that person was acquitted by the decision of the majority of the sitting jury. Similarly, to absolve a person from his allegiance, obligation or oath means to set him free from the same.
