Active Ingredient Law & Legal Definition

An active ingredient is generally defined as any ingredient from which an additive derives all or part of its value or effectiveness and that is defined in the current edition of Merck's Chemical Index or recorded in Chemical Abstracts. By law, the active ingredient of certain products, such as under the federal law governing pesticides, must be identified by name on the label together with its percentage by weight.
