Birth Mother Law & Legal Definition

A birth mother is the biological mother who gave birth to a child. A birth mother generally does not have any right over her child if she consents to adoption of her birth child. Once adoption is consented to, a birth mother looses all her rights to custody and visitation with that child. The term ‘birth mother’ was coined as a part of an effort towards positive and respectful adoption language. Other terms for birth mother are natural mother and biological mother. Birth father, birth grandparents, birth family are the other terms used for referring to an adopted child’s biological family.
