Anything made of matter is therefore a chemical. Any liquid, solid, gas. Chemistry is closely related to physics and to biology. Knowledge of mathematics is an essential tool for the study of chemistry.

The main branches of chemistry include organic, inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry. Specialized areas include, among others, spectroscopy, geochemistry, and astrochemistry.
