Estate by Sufferance Law & Legal Definition

Estate by sufferance is a type of leasehold estate in which a tenant stays in possession of a property after the lease has expired or been legally terminated without the consent of the owner/landlord. It is the holding by one who came into possession rightfully, after the termination of the interest under which s/he came into possession, for example, the continuance in possession after the termination of a life estate by a person who had entered under a lease from the life tenant.
