Gravamen Law & Legal Definition

Gravamen is the essential element of a law suit. It is also known as the cause of action or claim in a law suit. It is the ground for a legal action that states the charge against the accused in a law suit. It may also be stated that gravamen is the grievance that is complained of. For example, in a breach of contract law suit, the cause of action will be the actual breach committed by the defendant.
