A human resource information system (HRIS) is a systematic procedure for gathering, storing, maintaining, retrieving, and revising human resource data. An HRIS will store information about employees, retirees, and their dependents and enable the employer to issue paychecks or retirement checks; withhold required taxes, retirement account contributions, and other deductions; track leave balances; provide insurance coverage and other employee benefits, and improve workforce management and budgeting.

An HRIS is a tool that optimally produces:

  •     Simplified data entry
  •     Less paperwork
  •     Less delay
  •     Better user feedback
  •     Increased efficiency
  •     Highly detailed budget information
  •     Improved tools for data analysis
