Mesne Profit Law & Legal Definition

The term refers to the profit received from an estate by a tenant in wrongful possession. Mesne profit is often calculated when there is a claim to recover the accruals from a property illegitimately held by a person. It is the profit that has accrued while there was a dispute over land ownership. If a party using a particular parcel of land did not have legal ownership, the true owner can sue for some or all of the profit that the person made during the period of illegal tenancy.
