Showy clothing is known as regalia. Academic regalia or academic dress is a traditional form of clothing used in academic ceremonies. Academic regalia are worn mainly by students admitted to a university degree. Nowadays, academic regalia are used only at graduation ceremonies. A model academic regalia consists of a gown or a robe with a separate hood and a cap. The cap can be a mortarboard, a tam, or a bonnet. Members of certain learned societies and institutions use academic regalia as official dress. In the U.S., there is an inter-collegiate code setting out a detailed uniform scheme of academic regalia.
