Affreightment Law and Legal Definition
Affreightment is a contract by which a ship is hired to carry goods in return for a sum of money. This is a usually a contract between a ship-owner and another person called the charterer. In this kind of contract, the ship-owner may carry the goods of the charterer in his ship, or give the charterer the use of the cargo space for a specified period of time.
