According to 14 CFR 1.1 [Title 14: Aeronautics and Space: Chapter I -- Federal Aviation Administration, Department of Transportation], altitude engine means a reciprocating aircraft engine having a rated takeoff power that is producible from sea level to an established higher altitude.
