Ambulance Chaser Law and Legal Definition
Ambulance chaser is a derogatory phrase which is used to describe a lawyer who specializes in representing accident victims. It typically refers to attorneys who solicit business from accident victims or their families. In the U.S., such conduct is violative of the American Bar Association Model Rules of Professional Conduct.
Similarly, some of the bar associations enforce rules against ambulance chasing. For example, California bar dispatches investigators to disaster spots in order to discourage ambulance chasers. This helps to catch anyone who attempt to solicit business from the accident victims.
Ambulance chaser is also used to indicate funeral directors who solicit business from dying individuals. They earn commissions from the funeral service provider they work with. The term is also used as a derogatory term in the media.
