American Clause Law and Legal Definition
In the context of marine insurance, an American clause prevents an insurer from claiming contribution from a policy that was purchased later by the insured. Under the American clause the underwriter does not assume responsibility for partial losses unless caused by stranding, sinking, burning or collision with another vessel.
