Amethyst Initiative Law and Legal Definition
Amethyst Initiative is an U.S. organization formed for reconsidering the drinking age laws. It was initiated by John McCardell and is currently supported by 135 college presidents. The initiative stresses on reconsidering the drinking age of 21 as established by the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984. The Act of 1984 requires all states to raise their minimum age for purchase and public possession of alcohol to 21. The initiative aims to open debates on alcohol policies that affect young people and their choices about alcohol use. It urges lawmakers to invite new ideas about the best ways to prepare young adults to make responsible decisions about alcohol. According to Greek and Roman legend, amethysts protected their owners from drunkenness. Hence the name Amethyst initiative.
