Assignment of Dower Law and Legal Definition
Assignment of Dower is the act of ascertainment and setting apart a widow’s share of her deceased husband's real property. The assignment is ordinarily one-third of the productive value of the property at the time of the assignment. However, the improvements made by a person to whom the husband has conveyed property during marriage without his wife's consent are not included in the valuation. If dower is not assigned to the widow, she may institute proceedings to compel assignment.
Assignment of Dower is also known as segregation of dower or establishment of dower.
