Assignment of Support Rights Law and Legal Definition
Assignment of support rights means that a parent transfers their rights to receive some or all of their child support payments to the state, to pay it back for public assistance benefits received from the state. In other words, when the parent receives public assistance, the state pays for the benefits to be provided to the parent and family, and in return the state is allowed to keep child support payments to reimburse itself for the cost of the benefits. The benefits provided may include cash award and/or medical insurance.
In the U.S. most states have specific laws regarding assignment of support rights.
