Automatic-adjustment clause is a provision in a utility-rate schedule. This provision allows a public utility to increase its rates without a public hearing or state review. However, the rate increase is permitted only if certain operating costs, such as the price of fuel, increase. The objective of an automatic adjustment clause is to mitigate the effect on utility revenues of relatively volatile cost items which a utility purchases continuously.
