Backberend is a term used to refer to a person carrying off stolen property. Commonly the stolen property is beared on the person’s back. Therefore, the term is also known as back bearing. The term may also be used to refer to a person caught carrying stolen goods.
Bacberend is an Anglo-Saxon term, meaning "having in one's possession." It is also spelled backberende or backberinde.
