Balance Billing (Health Care) Law and Legal Definition
Balance billing is the practice of billing a patient for charges not paid by his/her insurance plan because the charges are in excess of covered amounts. Balance billing amount will often be charges that are above the usual and customary rate. Balance billing arises when health care providers participating in the managed-care network or in medicare believe that the health plan does not cover the medical service.
