Banns of Matrimony Law and Legal Definition
Banns of Matrimony is an early day term used to refer to a public notice of an intended marriage. Such notices were given to make sure that the objection to the wedding, if any, can be raised before the wedding. The term is also spelled as bans of matrimony.
Banns of marriage or matrimony are commonly associated with the Church of England and with other denominations whose traditions are similar.
