Blasphemy Law and Legal Definition
Blasphemy means irreverence toward God, religion, a religious icon, or something else which is considered sacred.
Blasphemy was a crime at common law and it remains so in some U.S. jurisdictions because of its tendency to stir up breaches of the peace. However, it is rarely if ever enforced because of its questionable constitutionality under the First Amendment.
In England , all blasphemies against God, the Christian religion, the Holy Scriptures, and malicious revilings of the established church are punishable by indictment.
