Business Associate [Public Welfare] Law and Legal Definition
A business associate refers to a person or entity that performs certain functions or activities that involve the use or disclosure of protected health information on behalf of, or provides services to, a covered entity.
Business associate functions and activities include:
a. claims processing or administration;
b. data analysis, processing or administration;
c. utilization review;
d. quality assurance; billing;
e. benefit management;
f. practice management; and
g. repricing.
Business associate services are legal, actuarial, accounting, consulting, data aggregation, management, administrative, accreditation, and financial. [45 CFR 160.103].
