Child Protective Services (CPS) / Department of Social Services (DSS) Law and Legal Definition
Child Protective Services (CPS) is a governmental agency in many states of the United States with responsibility for investigating allegations of child abuse and neglect. It also provides family services to the parent or guardian of a child who has been abused or neglected, and also administers the foster-care program. CPS is also known as "Department of Social Services" (DSS) or simply "Social Services in some states."
