Civilian Review Law and Legal Definition
Civilian review boards are made up of citizens who investigate complaints by members of the public regarding police misconduct. They are sometimes independent agencies or part of a law enforcement agency. Typically, they are limited to reviewing an already completed internal police investigation, and providing comments on it to the Chief of Police. The civilian review boards are often criticized as not being very effective because they typically back the internal investigation determination of the police department.
