Close-Hauled Law and Legal Definition
Close-hauled is a nautical term. In admiralty law, it means the arrangement or trimming flat of a vessel’s sails when she endeavors to make progress in the nearest direction possible towards that point of the compass from which the wind blows. However, a vessel can also be considered as close-hauled although the vessel is not very near to the wind.
