Coercive diplomacy refers to the use of threats or limited application of force to persuade an opponent to call off or undo an action. For instance giving up a territory that has been occupied. Coercive diplomacy differs from deterrence. In deterrence threat is employed to dissuade an opponent from undertaking an action that has not yet been initiated.
