Community Mental Health System Law and Legal Definition
Community mental health system is the system intended to provide a community based public mental health services to those people who needs assistance in the communities where they reside. Development of the community mental health system can be traced to enactment of the Community Mental Health Centers Act of 1964 (CMHA).CMHA provided grants to states for the establishment of local mental health centers, under the overview of the National Institute of Mental Health. The purpose of the CMHA was to provide for community-based care, as an alternative to institutionalization.
