Commutation in criminal law refers to a reduction or lessening of a sentence or punishment by the executive head of the government, such as a governor of a state. It is distinguished from a pardon in that it does not nullify the conviction.
A commutation may be graned for various reasons. For example, failing health of the prisoner may be cited in a request for a commutation of sentence.
