Composer Agreement Law and Legal Definition
A composer agreement is an agreement whereby a film company or producer hires a music composer on a work-for-hire basis to create the musical composition for a motion picture or film. It sets out the basic relationship, duties and obligations of and between the film company and composer. Generally, it allots to the company complete ownership and control of the music created. However, such a right is subject to the composer sharing in the royalties earned from exploitation of the music. These royalties usually come from the music used inside the context of the production and by exploitation of the music by the company licensing it to others.
