Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section Law and Legal Definition
The Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section (CCIPS) is a component of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). This section is under the Criminal Division of the DOJ. The CCIPS is charged with the responsibility of implementing the DOJ’s national strategies in combating computer and intellectual property crimes across the globe. Additionally, it takes the responsibility of investigating computer crime and intellectual property crime and specializing in the search and seizure of digital evidence in computers and on networks.
The Computer Crime Initiative is a comprehensive program designed to combat electronic penetrations, data thefts, and cyber attacks on critical information systems. The CCIPS works with other government agencies, the private sector, academic institutions, and foreign counterparts to control and combat computer and intellectual property crimes.
To achieve the CCIPS’s goals, its attorneys regularly run complex investigations, resolve unique legal and investigative issues raised by emerging computer and telecommunications technologies; train federal, state, and local law enforcement personnel; litigate cases; provide litigation support to other prosecutors; comment on and propose legislation; and initiate and participate in international efforts to combat computer and intellectual property crime.
