Continuation in Part [Patents] Law and Legal Definition
When used in the context of patents, the term ‘continuation in part’ refers to a patent application filed during the lifetime of an earlier patent application, by the same applicant. It is often abbreviated as CIP. A CIP patent application repeats a substantial part of the original application , and it either adds or subtracts to the original application.
