Contracts Clause Law and Legal Definition
The contracts clause of the U.S. Constitution prohibits states from passing a law which would obstruct or impair any private contractual obligations. The Supreme Court has interpreted this clause generally. Therefore, the states can regulate private contractual obligations if the regulation is reasonable and if it is essential or necessary in serving a vital public purpose.
