Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service Law and Legal Definition
The Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES) was an agency within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The CSREES aimed to improve economic, environmental, and social conditions in the U.S. and all across the globe. The service supports research, education, and extension programs in the Land-Grant University System and partner organizations. The CSREES does not do actual research but helps fund it at the state and local levels.
The CSREES was formed pursuant to the 1994 Department Reorganization Act. CSREES was created by combining the former Cooperative State Research Service and the Extension Service into a single agency. In 2009, CSREES was reorganized into the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).
