According to 49 CFR 180.403 [Title 49 – Transportation; Subtitle B Other Regulations Relating To Transportation; Chapter I Pipeline And Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, Department Of Transportation; Subchapter C Hazardous Materials Regulations; Part 180 Continuing Qualification And Maintenance Of Packagings; Subpart E Qualification And Maintenance Of Cargo Tanks], corroded or abraded means “any visible reduction in the material thickness of the cargo tank wall or valve due to pitting, flaking, gouging, or chemical reaction to the material surface that effects the safety or serviceability of the cargo tank. The term does not include cosmetic or minor surface degradation that does not effect the safety or serviceability of the cargo tank.”
