Custody refers to the care and control of a thing or person for inspection, preservation, or security. For example, custody could refer to the confinement, detention or imprisonment of a person. Custody could also refer to keeping, guarding, care, watch, inspection, preservation, or security of property. Under family law Custody refers to the care, control, and maintenance of a child awarded by a court to a responsible adult.
