Declaration of an Incident of National Significance Law and Legal Definition
Declaration of an incident of national significance refers to an incident declared by the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (Secretary). It includes all Presidentially-declared emergencies, major disasters, and catastrophes. The Secretary in coordination with other federal departments and agencies, initiates actions to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from such incident. The Secretary takes these actions in conjunction with state, local, tribal, nongovernmental, and private-sector entities.
