According to 10 CFR 20.1003 [Title 10 – Energy; Chapter I -- Nuclear Regulatory Commission; Part 20 -- Standards for Protection Against Radiation; Subpart A -- General Provisions], the term decommission means “to remove a facility or site safely from service and reduce residual radioactivity to a level that permits -
_1_ Release of the property for unrestricted use and termination of the license; or
_2_ Release of the property under restricted conditions and termination of the license.”
