Defense Against Weapons of Mass Destruction Act Law and Legal Definition
Defense Against Weapons of Mass Destruction Act is the law aimed at enhancing the capacity of the federal government to prevent and respond to terrorist attacks involving weapons of mass destruction. Hence, through this Act, Congress intended to prevent terrorist’s attacks that would include weapons of mass destruction and to enhance emergency response. It was introduced as an alternative to the Defend America Act of 1996, which failed to pass in the House of Representatives. The Act is also known as the Nunn-Lugar-Domenici Amendment. According to this Act, the Department of Defense must provide:
a. certain expert advice to federal, state, and local agencies about weapons of mass destruction to include domestic terrorism rapid response teams;
b. training in emergency response to the use or threat of use of weapons of mass destruction; and
c. a program of testing and improving the response of civil agencies to biological and chemical emergencies.
