A Deputy Secretary of a State is a person who holds the secretary ship of the Department of State. In the U.S., a Deputy Secretary is the chief assistant to the Secretary of State. S/he assists the Secretary in the overall management of the Department.
In the event of death or resignation of the Secretary of State, a Deputy Secretary of State becomes acting Secretary of State until the President nominates and the Senate confirms a replacement.
