Designated School Official Law and Legal Definition
Designated School Official (DSO) is a regular employee of the university (faculty or staff member), appointed by the school and approved by the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS). The DSO shall be the one who represents the school in all F-1 matters. Only a DSO shall sign immigration document for the school shall endorse at the back of the I-20 when someone prepares to leave the U.S. A DSO’s commission does not come from commission for recruitment of foreign students. DSOs are responsible to provide best possible service to their students and other constituents, and have to comply with the various federal regulations. A DSO act as an advisor, friend, mentor, confidant, and/or advocate to the international student.
