Ear Cropping Law and Legal Definition
Ear Cropping refers to the cropping of a purebred dog's ears to conform to a breed standard. Although this unnecessary cosmetic surgery is regularly performed by some veterinarians, it is often done by untrained individuals, without anesthesia, in unsterile environments.
The following is an example of a state statute on ear cropping:
“It is unlawful for any person to mark any bovine animal by cutting off more than one-half of an ear of the animal.” [Cal Food & Agr Code § 17553]
