Electric Vehicle Law and Legal Definition
According to 15 USCS § 2502 (3), [Title 15. Commerce and Trade; Chapter 52. Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Research, Development, and Demonstration] the term electric vehicle means “a vehicle which is powered by an electric motor drawing current from rechargeable storage batteries, fuel cells, or other portable sources of electrical current, and which may include a nonelectrical source of power designed to charge batteries and components thereof.”
According to 10 CFR 474.2 [Title 10 Energy; Chapter II Department of Energy; Subchapter D Energy Conservation; Part 474 Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Research, Development, and Demonstration Program; Petroleum-Equivalent Fuel Economy Calculation], the term electric vehicle means “a vehicle that is powered by an electric motor drawing current from rechargeable storage batteries or other portable electrical energy storage devices, provided that:
(1) Recharge energy must be drawn from a source off the vehicle, such as residential electric service; and
(2) The vehicle must comply with all provisions of the Zero Emission Vehicle definition found in 40 CFR 88.104-94(g).”
