Extensive Interpretation Law and Legal Definition
Extensive interpretation means a liberal interpretation that employs a statutory provision to a case involving ambiguity in its literal words. Interpretation is extensive whenever the reason of the law has a more enlarged sense than its terms. It is usually applied to a case which had not been explained. When an interpretation clause uses the word "includes", it is prima facie extensive interpretation. Therefore, when the word "include" is used in a definition clause, it is used as a word of enlargement, which is to make the definition extensive and not restrictive.
