Federal Grain Inspection Service Law and Legal Definition
The Federal Grain Inspection Service was a U.S. federal agency within the USDA that was established in 1976 to manage the national grain inspection system, and to institute a national grain weighing program. It is informally referred to as the FGIS. The FGIS was created to ensure development and maintenance of uniform U.S. standards, to develop inspection and weighing procedures for grain in domestic and export trade, and to facilitate grain marketing.
The FGIS was established pursuant to the U.S. Grain Standards Act. The Department of Agriculture Reorganization Act of 1994 merged FGIS with the Packers and Stockyards Administration to form a new agency, the Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration (GIPSA).
