Flood Management Law and Legal Definition
Many states empower the county commissioners or other governing body to manage land use to prevent the risk of damage and injury from flooding. Such land use management measures may include zoning ordinances, subdivision regulations, building codes, health regulations and other applications and extensions of the normal police power to provide safe standards of occupancy for prudent use of flood-prone areas. Some of the strategies employed in flood management include:
- Constricting the development of land which is exposed to flood damage in the flood-prone areas;
- Guiding the development of proposed construction away from locations which are threatened by flood hazards;
- Assisting in reducing damage caused by floods; and
- Otherwise improving the long-range management and use of flood-prone areas.
