Freeway Law and Legal Definition
Freeway refers to a limited access road or highway to which access from adjacent properties is limited. In the U.S., freeway is sometimes referred to as interstate, thruway, expressway, and turnpike. In U.K. and Ireland freeway is known as motorway. A freeway is also known as toll free road. The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) has defined freeway as a divided highway with full control of access. Generally, traffic on a freeway is free flowing. However, not all expressways are freeways. Some expressways in contrast to freeways have partial control of access.
