Freight Vessel Law and Legal Definition
Freight vessel is a vessel that is used for the transportation of goods from one port to another. It carries freight for hire.
The following is an example of a federal statute defining the term:
According to 46 USCS § 2101, "freight vessel" means a motor vessel of more than 15 gross tons as measured under section 14502 of this title [46 USCS § 14502], or an alternate tonnage measured under section 14302 of this title [46 USCS § 14302] as prescribed by the Secretary under section 14104 of this title [46 USCS § 14104] that carries freight for hire, except an oceanographic research vessel or an offshore supply vessel.
