Legal status is the status defined by law. It is the standing of an entity. For example, citizenship and marital status. Citizenship is the status of a citizen with rights and duties. Marital status is the condition of being married or unmarried.
In May v. Daniels, 359 Ark. 100, 108 (Ark. 2004), the court held “the term legal status is commonly used in Arkansas law to classify an individual and identify the legal rights and duties for such a classification, like the legal status of an invitee or a stepparent.
