Litis Contestatio Law and Legal Definition
Litis Contestatio is a civil proceeding in which controversial issues are established and submitted before a magistrate for examination of fact and judgment. Litis contestatio consists of statements relating to the claim or demand that are made before the magistrate by the parties to a suit. Answers or defence made in response are also categorized as litis contestatio.
After litis contestatio the cause is ready for hearing. The situation at the time of litis contestatio is decided at the time of final judgment. An award passed after litis contestation is final.
