Magistrate Judges are judicial officers who assist U.S. district judges in performing their duties. They conduct civil and criminal proceeding for speedy disposition of case loads before district courts. Magistrate judges are appointed by a majority vote of the federal district judges of a particular district. They serve for a term of eight years if full-time, or four years if part-time.
